HUNTING

New Zealand offers a variety of hunting opportunities. There are seven species of deer, the most common are Red, Fallow, and Sika. The Samba, Whitetail, Rusa, Wapiti (Elk) are found in more localised herds. We also have Thar, Chamois, pigs, goats, wild cattle and sheep for the larger game enthusiast.

Our game bird species are Canada Geese, Turkey , Black Swan, Mallard and Grey Duck, Spoonbill/ Shoveler Duck, Paradise Duck, Pukeko, Pheasant, Quail, Peacock, and Feral Pigeon.

Then there is our lesser chased species, considered vermin by some, and include Hares, Rabbits, Possums, Wallaby, Rooks, Magpies, each with their own merit from a sports person’s perspective.

Hunts for most species can be arranged.

FISHING

New Zealand is the home of the best trout fishing in the world. Here in the Wairarapa we are only four hours from the renowned Tongariro/Taupo trout fishery.

What is not well known is that here in the Wairarapa we enjoy some very good trout fishing, whether sight fishing large mountain trout, or casting to the rise on a river or lake, we have it - with little or no competition from other anglers.

We also have an abundant supply of aggressive Perch, an exciting fresh water fish growing to about 3lb.

You may like to try sea fishing from shore, or a boat.

CORE BUSINESS

While there is not an outdoor recreation we will not endeavour to provide while you are here in New Zealand we do have our specialties.

ALLEN OUTDOORS has an extensive range of bird hunting equipment.

Canada Goose Hunting.

We offer a limited number of 3-5 day specialised goose hunts during February and March, when hunting is at its best. Bookings are essential for this period. Good goose hunting is available outside of these blocked dates, and can be offered in conjunction with any other activity you may choose to follow.

Our Canada Goose population is by and large resident. As the season extends the geese become increasingly "educated", making them far more wary and it becomes increasingly hard to provide the quality of hunting we expect for our clients. That's not to say that birds cannot still be taken by the diligent hunter seeking the reward that comes from effort and persistence. They are known as the world's premier game bird for good reason.

Duck Hunting.

From the first weekend in May until July (seasonally dependent) we offer the opportunity to hunt our game bird species. Again, as the season extends the birds become more wary but with resident birds good hunting can be found throughout the season. Hunting may range from hunting in hides on farm ponds, over flood water, open paddocks, or stalking ponds and streams.

Species such as the New Zealand Shoveller and Paradise Shelducks make great trophies and are not found outside New Zealand .

Swan Hunting.

Black Swan can be hunted from the first weekend in May until August (varies year to year), giving the overseas visitor a rare opportunity to hunt this massive and beautiful bird.

Pheasant Hunting, Quail Hunting

From 2010 Allenoutdoors will be providing walked-up hunting for upland gamebirds such as pheasant and quail.

Turkey Hunting.

We have numerous turkey, with no season and no limits. They are rarely hunted for sport as they are in the US , so a great opportunity exists to bag a trophy and hone one’s skills. We can guarantee that few have been called to.

Clay Target and Rifle Range

Practice will be offered shooting clay targets in a way that will help you adjust to the styles of hunting you are likely to encounter here. For the lesser experienced a chance for some basic tuition and enhancement, and for the experienced an opportunity to polish the skills.

We believe it is ethical to enter the field with a level of shooting confidence, and it is also a form of conservation. We have witnessed continual "bomb ups" of birds with little success. Many birds catch something in these situations and it also needlessly scares the birds in the area.

Sighting and practising with rifles on a range will be recommended and provided also.

Red and Fallow Deer

Hunting deer in New Zealand comes in many forms and can be loosely separated three ways. Public Land Hunting comes with increased hunting pressure and fewer animals. On Private Land , deer are often in good numbers, free to come and go as they please. In a Safari Park, deer are fenced in, usually in very large areas, and will harbour good numbers of deer, but this does not necessarily make them easy to acquire.

All of these options can be accessed here in the Wairarapa or further afield, and take in other species if you wish.

ACCOMMODATION AT CABBAGE TREE COTTAGE

You will be living in our cottage known as Cabbage Tree Cottage during your stay, unless our activities take us further afield. Depending on your requirements, home cooked meals will be provided. Cabbage Tree Cottage is fully serviced with cooking facilities

Cabbage Tree Cottage is a comfortable two bedroom cottage, furnished with comfort in mind.
